What is Different About Scottish Spiritualism and Mediumship?

Our training is specifically set up to fully prepare you as a working professional medium, enabling you to earn an income. However, you have clearly indicated to our Training Adviser that you are not interested in the business side of what we offer. We do, however, have a less onerous system for people just looking for development. We still teach our Scottish-based methodology, which you will find unique.

Modern Mediumship: A Tale of Two Regions

The birth of modern mediumship is often traced back to New York State (NYS) with the Fox sisters in the mid-19th century. Given this origin, one might expect NYS to be the global hub of spiritualism. However, the numbers tell a different story:

  • Scotland: Approximately 400 Spiritual Centers (known as churches in Scotland)

  • New York State: 12 Spiritual Centers, with four located in Lilydale

Lilydale, NYS, is often regarded as the capital of mediumship in the USA, yet Scotland has a far higher concentration of spiritualists.

To provide a clearer comparison, consider the population of each region:

  • New York State Population: 19.4 million

  • Scotland Population: 5.5 million

Using these figures, we can calculate the number of spiritual centers per million people:

  • Scotland: 400 centers5.5 million people = 72.7 centers per million people

  • New York State: 12 centers19.4 million people=0.62 centers per million people

This means that Scotland has approximately 117 times more spiritual centers per million people than New York State.

Distinctive Approaches to Mediumship

Scottish mediumship markedly differs from its American counterpart. In the USA, mediums might broadly call out to an audience, such as saying, "I have a spirit called John, can anyone take him?" In contrast, Scottish mediums take a direct approach. They pinpoint an individual and convey a message specifically to them: "I have a spirit called John, can you take him?"

Ancient Roots and Historical Influences

Scottish spiritualism's roots extend back thousands of years, with its survival attributed to unique historical circumstances. When Julius Caesar and subsequent Roman forces eradicated Celtic tribes across Europe, Scotland (and Ireland) remained largely untouched. This allowed ancient spiritual practices, including beliefs in animal spirits and communication with the deceased, to endure through Christianity into modern Scotland.

One of the most iconic symbols of Scottish culture is the enduring spirit of freedom, famously portrayed in the movie "Braveheart." The scene where William Wallace, played by Mel Gibson, rallies his troops with the cry of "Freedom!" encapsulates the fiercely independent and resilient nature of the Scottish people. This spirit has continued from the Celts through the ages, making Scottish culture distinct from that of our English cousins.

Scotland also holds the grim distinction of having the highest per capita executions for witchcraft during the witch trials. While not all accused were mediums, many might have been individuals providing messages from the deceased—a concept hard to comprehend in the 16th century.

Helen Duncan: A WWII Spiritualist

One of the most famous figures in Scottish spiritualism is Helen Duncan, a medium whose story became entwined with WWII history. In 1941, during a séance, Helen revealed the sinking of HMS Barham, a fact kept secret by the British government. This revelation led to her being charged under the Witchcraft Act of 1735, making her the last person in Britain to be convicted under this law.

Helen Duncan's trial in 1944, and her subsequent imprisonment, highlighted the tension between spiritualism and state security during wartime. After her release, spiritualist practices continued to be scrutinized, yet her legacy persisted, influencing public perception and the spiritualist movement in Scotland.

Notable Figures in Scottish Spiritualism

Several prominent Scots have contributed to the spiritualist movement:

  • Sir Arthur Conan Doyle: Creator of Sherlock Holmes and a fervent spiritualist.

  • John Logie Baird: Inventor of the television, who reported being guided by spirits.

  • Queen Victoria: Queen of Scotland, became a believer after attending a séance.

Even contemporary figures like Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s former First Minister, have connections to mediumship through family.
